Summary

  1. Pak 145-2published at 50 overs

    Ayub 62, Ghulam 68

Well if there is reverse swing I cannot see it in this over. There's a lot of grunting from Matthew Potts but no real danger to the batters.

Zak Crawley lets one through his legs to allow Pakistan to steal a single.

Beautiful delivery from Ben Stokes and it might've come off the batters hip, that's why it dribbled to the boundary.

The ball is looking like it might be starting to reverse swing.

When you see cracks in the middle of the pitch seam bowlers are a good option.

But England must think the ball is starting to reverse swing. Matthew Potts is immediately summoned from the deep.

  4. Pak 144-2published at 49 overs

Edged but there's no-one there! Ben Stokes doesn't have any slips in fact.

That could have been the breakthrough.

Sounds like Root's services with the ball are going to be required in this one. Can't have our pace bowlers bending their backs for all their pace to be nullified by a pudding of a wicket! Hopefully conditions change to help them out later in the session?

  6. ouch!

    Pak 140-2published at 48.3 overs

The physios are coming onto the field but not for Ben Stokes. It looks like Kamran Ghulam has cramp in his right arm.

One thing I can say is Ben Stokes has taken off his cap to reveal a questionable mullet.

    His first delivery is gentle.

Here's Ben Stokes for his first bowl in a Test since July!

Kamran Ghulam looks a nice assured player.

He come in at 19-2. He will have been under pressure and aware of the person's [Babar Azam] place he was taking.

  10. Pak 138-2published at 48 overs

    Ayub 61, Ghulam 62

A hideous hack from Kamrun Ghulam and a more controlled drive over mid-off by Saim Ayub keeps the scoreboard ticking in this over from Jack Leach.

Ayub did not look up to much in the first Test with those two early dismissals but you can see what the fuss is about with shots like that. This is now his highest Test score.

Are England trying to smuggle in an extra bowler under the cover of towels?

Brydon Carse is trying hard to find some life in the surface and he was trying to trouble the batters with the short length. Clearly there's nothing there for it.

  13. drinks break

    Drinks - Pak 131-2published at 47 overs

    Ayub 57, Ghulam 59

Ben Stokes pulls a worried face after a third delivery in the over bounces twice through to Jamie Smith.

The pitch may be offering more turn but it's like bowling onto an apple crumble if you're a pace bowler.

That'll be drinks at the end of a good hour for Pakistan.

I don't know if this will be worrying Pakistan's camp that the ball is not square turning - it may do something different on day two or three.

  15. Pak 127-2published at 46 overs

Ben Stokes tests out that hamstring by chasing down an edge off the bat of Kamran Ghulam.

Brydon Carse is coming back on.

I will go one better than Rob’s run-out. I danced down the wicket to a slow off-spinner during a match, missed it by a mile and was given not out by the square-leg umpire as he wasn’t watching the game. Having got a second chance, did the same thing again but this time the umpire was watching.

But was it on your birthday? If not, Anon, I'm afraid it doesn't count...

  17. Pak 125-2published at 45 overs

    Ayub 57, Ghulam 57

Kamran Ghulam is growing in confidence on his debut now. He gets down low to swish a reverse sweep off Shoaib Bashir and connects well enough for four runs.

An aerial shot of the pitch shows how many cracks the batters' are standing among. It's playing nicely now, though.

41 players have made their Test debut for Pakistan against England.

Only one other has made a 50 in their first innings and that was Rashid Latif who got out for 50 at the Oval in 1992.

  19. Pak 120-2published at 44 overs

    AyubImage source, Getty Images

Ben Stokes fiddles with his field again.

A slip, leg slip, short leg, catching mid-wicket and Zak Crawley on the drive under a floppy hat is his latest choice.

The result is an uncontrolled top-edge landing safely in the deep. You can't have them everywhere.

    Kamran Ghulam is in control.

He's very good against spin and plays the ball late. He is firm with his feet movement and whenever there's an opportunity he has scored runs.
