Pakistan will be happy with that session. The run-rate has been upped a little bit.

Although England got the wicket it was Pakistan's session.

    Ooooft.

The final ball of the session is edged by Saud Shakeel wide of the helmeted Joe Root. Stokes has his hands over his eyes.

That remains Pakistan's session but it ended with a boost for England.

  4. Pak 169-3published at 56.4 overs

Can we put Matty Potts into the 'makes things happen' category of cricketer?

And there's only one more over to go before tea.

    Ben Stokes' captaincy strikes again.

One of those peculiar fields and those tactics you don't normally see.

The batter thinks it's there to drive and Ben Stokes is perfectly poised in a catching position.

    Stokes makes things happen.

Don't you love it when a plan comes together?

Matthew Potts bowls an over outside off stump, trying to tempt Saim Ayub into a drive.

Five balls pass without a false shot but on the final delivery of the over, Ayub drives straight into the hands of skipper Stokes himself at short mid-off.

  9. Pak 168-2published at 55 overs

    Ayub 77, Ghulam 74

Ben Stokes' fourth over passes without an opening.

He looks fit. His heels are flicking to reveal the pinky orange soles of his boots.

  10. Pak 167-2published at 54 overs

We've just had a "WAIT ON" from Kamran Ghulam now. I thought I had a winter away from this.

England will be looking for that reverse swing, the ball has been going a bit more.

The square is a bit rougher than the previous Test match, but England have to be patient.

  12. Pak 164-2published at 53 overs

    Ayub 73, Ghulam 74

    Ha. Outstanding.

Kamran Ghulam goes full Steve Smith or Marnus Labuschagne by pointing his bat back down the pitch like a fencer as he turns down a single.

Stokes just holds his arms out as if to say "what are you doing?".

Joe Root's response at slip is to put shin pads and a helmet on to stand very close at slip off Stokes.

  15. Pak 162-2published at 52.2 overs

Another edge off the bowling of Ben Stokes!

There's a slip this time but the ball doesn't carry.

  16. Pak 162-2published at 52 overs

There have been more edges in the past four overs than the previous 20 combined. The reverse swing may not be significant but it's enough.

Saim Ayub nicks off through the gully for four and then almost chops onto his stumps as the ball is hit onto his boot and it loops over off.

    Potts is fuming.

The groundsman has taken a dustpan and brush out to brush away the flaky ends where the bowlers' feet are landing.

If you're landing and it's dusty, your spikes don't grip onto anything.

It is far harder to commit to the action of bowling.

A golden duck on my 30th birthday, plumb lbw. Fortunately, we were a man down so the oppo let me bat again. Five-ball duck, to what ended up being their catch of the season.

    Jim

  19. Pak 151-2published at 51 overs

Woah. A beauty from Ben Stokes that has definitely swung away. Kamran Ghulam is grinning knowing he had very little chance of getting his bat on that.

The next ball takes the edge and runs for four. Stokes is making things happen.

Kamran Ghulam has looked very comfortable against the spinners today, playing only 10% false shots.

In the limited deliveries he's faced against pace bowlers, he's played 38% false shots.
